How long have you volunteered with Teesside Hospice?

Nearly 2 years.

Which area of Teesside Hospice do you volunteer in and what do you do day to day?

I volunteer on reception on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon. I answer the phone, answer any questions or queries that may arise, meet and greet any visitors to the hospice, talk to the patients if they come into reception, take parcels in, interact with staff, and sell merchandise from the shops.

What is the reason you started to volunteer with Teesside Hospice?

I was a patient at the lymphoedema clinic and I wanted to give back as a way of saying thank you.

What has your experience been like volunteering with Teesside Hospice?

Absolutely brilliant. It is the best place I have volunteered for.

What has volunteering with Teesside Hospice done for you?

It has given me more confidence. I always put myself down and don’t think I’m worthy enough, so it has brought me out of my shell. Now I don’t worry so much what other people think of me. I get along with most people in here very well, and I have been nominated for the South Tees star award by a member of staff here.

Do you have any advice for potential Teesside Hospice volunteers?

Just do it. Come along, have a chat with our volunteer coordinator and see if it would be for you, or come and have a look around. Just go for it – if you don’t like it there is no pressure.
