How long have you volunteered with Teesside Hospice?

Since 2021 – but I started at the Redcar store first

Which area of Teesside Hospice do you volunteer in and what do you do day to day?

I volunteer at the Eston Store. I started as a volunteer and now I am a volunteer supervisor, so I help to cover if the manager is off. I practiced and built up my confidence in order to do this over time. There was a need for the role and I felt as though I would be able to do it and felt supported to do so.

What is the reason you started to volunteer with Teesside Hospice?

It was through the jobcentre as I needed to do some charity work in my job search. It was to help build up my skills and to put on my CV – being a volunteer supervisor is very good experience to put down on my CV.

What has your experience been like volunteering with Teesside Hospice?

I have enjoyed it. The atmosphere with the other volunteers is great – we have a good laugh. It is a great team to be a part of.

What has volunteering with Teesside Hospice done for you?

It has built my confidence massively. I had a hard time after my mother passing away so it has helped get me back to normal and like my old self. I am also doing an English course to improve my reading and spelling, and have passed my grade 1 and grade 2 tests, and being a supervisor in the store has helped me with improving my skills on this. I feel a lot better now.

Do you have any advice for potential Teesside Hospice volunteers?

Do it – if you don’t like it then you don’t have to stay, so just try it out.
