Claire's Journey Walking by Midnight for Teesside Hospice

Claire and her son, Sebastian took part in our Midnight Memory Walk this year, in memory of their amazing Mam and Nana. Read Claire's story as she shared her experience of her second Midnight walk for Teesside Hospice.

Wow what can I say…. What an incredible experience it was to take part in the Midnight Walk for the second time for me and my son. Teesside Hospice took amazing care of my Mam during 2016-2018. She spent many occasions as a patient receiving palliative care. She felt at such comfort and received fantastic support from the staff. My children came to visit most days and have special memories of walking to the pond with Nana and tucking into those incredible scones, which I’m sure were for the patients!

Mam helped raise thousands for the charity, getting us all involved in the GNR, climbing the Transporter bridge and doing charity bingo nights! Mam’s wish was to be cared for by Teesside Hospice for her end of life and the hospice welcomed her with open arms, which our family is eternally grateful for.

My son, Sebastian is 9 and last year he was really struggling with grieving at the loss of his grandparents. He wanted to do something to raise money for ‘Nana’s Hospice’ as he calls it and what a great achievement at the age of only 8 last year! He’s raised over £350 this year and we’re immensely proud of him!

The walk itself on the night was so overwhelming, seeing all those amazing people treasure their loved ones in that special way. Not only does it raise the money for the hospice but to us it also serves as part of the healing process and our journey to carry our Nana’s light. The Domino's pizza was a great treat to end the night and the DJ and atmosphere got us in the spirit! My son was desperate to do the 360 dance video, and I really wasn’t! But I’m so glad we did it as now we have that special video of us having a great time plus it was a great start to get others up doing it!

We’re already looking forward to next year and I’m roping his twin twin sister and other family members into doing too!
