One of our recent winners, Dr John, has supported Teesside Hospice for over 30 years. After moving to Yarm in 1991, he was introduced to the hospice by a local volunteer who spoke passionately about the difference it makes to families across our community. Inspired by that conversation, he signed up to the lottery and has been playing ever since.
Like many of our supporters, Dr John has seen first-hand how important hospice care is. With his son currently receiving end-of-life care in hospital, he understands just how vital compassionate, specialist support can be during the most difficult times.
When Dr John recently won £1,000, he was both surprised and delighted, having only ever won small amounts before. True to his generous nature, he chose to donate half of his winnings to hospice care, sharing the rest with family and friends over the Christmas period.
While winning can bring a wonderful surprise, the real impact of your support is felt every day by people like Brenda.
Her story shares what hospice care truly means - offering comfort, dignity and compassion when it matters most.
At Teesside Hospice, we’re here to support people and families through some of life’s most difficult moments, helping them live as well as possible, for as long as possible.
Brenda has been staying with us on our In-Patient Unit while receiving care for her lung disease. During this time, we sat down with her to listen to her story and understand how the hospice has supported her throughout her journey.
“I came to the hospice on quite a fluke. My own doctor said to me one day, would you consider going to the hospice and my immediate reaction was oh no! My doctor described it as a community and explained the activities going on here like art and craft groups, massages etc.
I visited the Wellbeing Centre first, and when I came here I wasn’t feeling too well - that’s when I got introduced to Dr Deane. From then on he took me under his wing and he truly saved me. I was coming in twice a week, I made friends with the girls from the Wellbeing group, and was really enjoying it.
I got pneumonia and Dr Deane got me to the hospice straight away, and thank god he did. It was the best day of my life coming here, and they’ve genuinely saved me.”
From those first visits, Brenda quickly realised that the hospice was more than she ever expected, it was a place of comfort, kindness and genuine care.
“The people at the hospice are the most wonderful people you could ever meet. I’m not just saying that for my story, I’m saying it because it’s true - each and every one of them cares so much.
They would do anything for me, and I can have anything I want at any time. The food is so nutritious, it’s all homemade and I’ve been having soups and fruit which have been beautiful. The chef, John comes in and asks me what I fancy to eat, and he’ll make you anything!
My husband is at home on his own and appreciates me being looked after so well. He’s coping well, but I certainly couldn’t cope without the support from him and the people at the hospice.”
From those first visits, Brenda quickly realised that the hospice was more than she ever expected. It was a place of comfort, kindness and genuine care.
“If it wasn’t for me coming to the hospice, I know I wouldn’t be here. When you’re here, everything is all about you. There aren’t enough adjectives to describe the place, it’s just beautiful.
I can’t say my thanks enough to Teesside Hospice. I wish I didn’t need the support, but I do, and I thank god for the people here.
People say to me, ‘what do you feel about dying’ and I think to myself, everybody dies eventually, it's inevitable. But to die in a place that’s surrounded with so much love, is all you can ask for. I’m in the care of people who genuinely want to get me better, and that’s all that matters.
I wish they had more funding to help more people, so I hope sharing my story encourages more people to support all the work you do.”
By playing our Summer Superdraw, you’re helping to make stories like Brenda’s possible.
Your support means we can continue providing expert care, comfort and dignity to people across Teesside.
On behalf of everyone here at Teesside Hospice, thank you for your support.
