Janet’s Volunteering Story
Janet is one of our wonderful meal service volunteers, gifting her time to serve lunches to our in-patients. Here she shares how she became involved with Teesside Hospice, and what she enjoys about her role.
We’re excited to share that we will be opening our first Superstore, selling second-hand fashion, homeware and white goods to raise funds for our services!
Based on Portrack Lane, the new store will open its doors this Spring, with an official opening date to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
The charity shop will stock a diverse range of donated products from a wide range of brands in fashion, homeware and white goods. It also features an outlet on its upper floor, where shoppers can get their hands on bargains from as low as £1.
Ten jobs are now being advertised, with roles including Superstore Manager, two Deputy Manager positions, Stock & Logistics Manager and Retail Administration Officer on offer, as well cashier, van driver and cleaning positions.
We are also looking for volunteers to support the above team members, helping to prepare stock and serves customers as we aim to make our first Superstore a popular destination for charity shoppers.
David Parkinson, Retail Development Manager at Teesside Hospice, said: “We’re so excited to be opening Teesside Hospice’s first ever Superstore and can’t wait to welcome the community to shop, donate and volunteer their time where possible.
“Charity shopping is always on the up, providing people with an ethical and accessible way to get their hands on some true gems in fashion, homeware and more. And on top of that, you’re making a huge difference to people across Teesside who use the hospice’s services.”
In the new store, there will also be a ‘donation station’ where supporters can drop off their pre-loved items to be sold on the shop floor, helping to generate much-needed funds for our services.
Mike Thornicroft, Teesside Hospice CEO, added: “I’m really proud of our team for reaching this milestone and can’t wait to see the Superstore thrive.
“Costs are set to rise to over £7 million annually to keep our services running free of charge for the Tees Valley community, and our retail stores provide a vital contribution to these costs. The new Superstore will help greatly towards our mission of ensuring everyone on Teesside can have access to the very best end of life care and support for their families and loved ones.
“Thank you to everyone for the support shown so far, and happy shopping!”

Previously, when Donna thought of the word hospice, she thought of dying – but that association changed after she became a patient. Donna shares how a stay on our In-Patient Unit has given her confidence and changed her misconceptions around hospice care.
Whether you’re looking to gain new skills or build on those you already have, volunteering can be a great way to broaden your knowledge. For Charlotte, who volunteers in our People Team, it was about building on the knowledge she’d gained on a recent course.
