Janet’s Volunteering Story
Janet is one of our wonderful meal service volunteers, gifting her time to serve lunches to our in-patients. Here she shares how she became involved with Teesside Hospice, and what she enjoys about her role.
As a patient of our Lymphoedema Clinic, Kevin has been given guidance and advice for managing his condition – and has seen great results. Since being referred to our team and following the regime set, he’s found reduced swelling, no tightness and heaviness in his legs, and softer skin:
“I was referred by my GP as Lymphoedema in the lower legs was suspected. This was confirmed by the Teesside Hospice team, explained fully and I was told how to care for the affected area – cleansing, moisturising and massage.
The team also advised on gentle exercise to help. I was measured and fitted for compression socks and my GP was notified to ensure repeat prescriptions for creams and lotions.
Since following the regime and using compression socks, swelling has reduced, tightness and heaviness of legs has ceased and the skin on the affected area is softer and more pliable.
I feel confident in looking after my legs and am grateful for the support and advice given by Kelly. I know if I have any questions or worries, the staff will be there to help me. The service has changed my life.
Everyone we’ve dealt with has been amazing. I cannot praise them enough. The care has been exemplary and has given me and my wife the confidence to manage my condition successfully.”

We're changing lives across Teesside by supporting people and families who've been affected by a terminal illness.

Previously, when Donna thought of the word hospice, she thought of dying – but that association changed after she became a patient. Donna shares how a stay on our In-Patient Unit has given her confidence and changed her misconceptions around hospice care.
Whether you’re looking to gain new skills or build on those you already have, volunteering can be a great way to broaden your knowledge. For Charlotte, who volunteers in our People Team, it was about building on the knowledge she’d gained on a recent course.
