Janet’s Volunteering Story
Janet is one of our wonderful meal service volunteers, gifting her time to serve lunches to our in-patients. Here she shares how she became involved with Teesside Hospice, and what she enjoys about her role.
“Hi, I’m Holly and I’m a volunteer at the Teesside Hospice shop on Linthorpe Road. I’ve been a volunteer here for five years, and I do things like serving customers on the till, talking to customers, sorting and pricing stock, and arranging displays in the window.
I wanted to volunteer for Teesside Hospice because it has always been a charity close to my heart. Teesside Hospice have helped one of my family members, and I have really nice memories from that time, about how kind the staff were and how lovely the place was.
Volunteering has really given me a lot of confidence. When I started here, I was too scared to work on the tills, so I stayed out back. Gradually, I’ve learnt more and more things, and now I’m here talking to customers everyday.
I feel like I’ve gained a massive amount of confidence from this, and I’ve also made so many friends. I’ve met people who I now consider lifelong friends from volunteering, and I love coming in everyday to talk to everyone and meet new people.”
Holly's story is a testament to the transformative power of volunteering! At Teesside Hospice, we're always looking for passionate people like Holly, who want to make a difference.

Previously, when Donna thought of the word hospice, she thought of dying – but that association changed after she became a patient. Donna shares how a stay on our In-Patient Unit has given her confidence and changed her misconceptions around hospice care.
Whether you’re looking to gain new skills or build on those you already have, volunteering can be a great way to broaden your knowledge. For Charlotte, who volunteers in our People Team, it was about building on the knowledge she’d gained on a recent course.
