We’re lucky to be supported by volunteers across all areas of our hospice, from the offices to the kitchen.

Janet is one of our wonderful meal service volunteers, gifting her time to serve lunches to our in-patients. Here she shares how she became involved with Teesside Hospice, and what she enjoys about her role:

“I originally decided to volunteer at the hospice following the death of my husband. I felt I needed something constructive and worthwhile to do, something that would give my life a purpose again.

I chose the IPU meal service for its caring aspect as, during my working life, I had been involved in the caring professions. Serving lunches to the in-patients gives me an opportunity to feel that I am making a difference, helping them to, once again, enjoy the food and dishes that are really special to them. If the menu options offered that day don't 'tickle their fancy', the kitchen staff are always happy to make something special that will spark their appetite once again. The role does involve working closely with all the lovely folk in the kitchen - they are a great bunch!

So if you're looking for something really worthwhile to get involved in, you won't go far wrong with volunteering for the IPU meal service.”

Thank you for choosing Teesside Hospice, Janet. If you’d like to learn more about volunteering with us, visit www.teessidehospice.org/volunteer.
