Janet’s Volunteering Story
Janet is one of our wonderful meal service volunteers, gifting her time to serve lunches to our in-patients. Here she shares how she became involved with Teesside Hospice, and what she enjoys about her role.
When Daisy was just 3 years old, she faced a loss no child should have to bear — her daddy went to heaven. Since then, she's been navigating grief in her own brave way.
In 2024, Daisy began her counselling journey through our Bereavement Counselling service here at Teesside Hospice, where she has found a safe space to explore her grief alongside other children.
Grief is a tough and often quiet journey, especially for children. That's why Daisy wanted to create this storybook — to help other little hearts understand that they're not alone, and it's okay to feel sad, confused, or lost.
Now aged 9. This book is Daisy's gentle way of talking to children, from one child to another, about love, loss, and healing. Because sometimes, the most powerful comfort comes from knowing someone else understands.
Daisy’s book was launched on Father’s Day in memory of her dad, and has already touched hearts across the region. Now known as a globally published 'kindness' author, her storytelling and impact has been incredible.
We’d like to wish a huge thank you to Daisy for sharing this special story with us, and for being such an inspiring person for other children across Teesside and beyond ⭐

Previously, when Donna thought of the word hospice, she thought of dying – but that association changed after she became a patient. Donna shares how a stay on our In-Patient Unit has given her confidence and changed her misconceptions around hospice care.
Whether you’re looking to gain new skills or build on those you already have, volunteering can be a great way to broaden your knowledge. For Charlotte, who volunteers in our People Team, it was about building on the knowledge she’d gained on a recent course.
