This Hospice Care Week, we’re shining a light on all the things we do to make our patients’ lives better and allow them to manage their conditions outside of the hospice setting.

One of our lovely patients Biff visits the hospice to take part in our Men’s Wellbeing group, which runs through our Wellbeing Centre. He shared how his perception of the group changed, after he was initially wary to come along.

Now, he works with our team of specialists to manage his pain, allowing him to continue to live his life at home. During the group, Biff has time to play games, quizzes and have chats with other patients, offering companionship and fun during difficult times.

He said: “My name’s Biff and I come to a group called Men’s Wellbeing at Teesside Hospice in Middlesbrough. I was offered to come a few months back, and I didn’t want to come because I thought ‘well it’s for other people, not me’, but then I came, I’ve been here for a few weeks now and it’s been absolutely brilliant.

The staff are spot on, the nurses are spot on, you couldn’t wish to meet nicer doctors, and they do everything that they say they’re going to do. They’re helping me with my pain management because I have bowel cancer and I’ve just been told a few weeks back that I’m now terminal. But then again, they put things forward to help you out.

We play games, we have quizzes, we have chats and all sorts, but you cant grumble because it’s absolutely spot on, and anybody that’s wanting to come I totally recommend it.”
