Previously known as Day Hospice, our Wellbeing Centre offers a safe, welcoming space where individuals can receive expert care, enjoy companionship and participate in enriching activities - all while living at home!

Our Wellbeing service is a referral only service. You can be referred to this service by your GP, consultant, Macmillan nurse, hospital or community health professional.

The Wellbeing Centre at Teesside Hospice is here to support you and your family. Our new programmes are designed with you in mind - to support your needs, your goals and your wellbeing when you need it most.

We understand having the right support can make a real difference, it can help you:

-Stay independent for longer

-Manage symptoms more effectively

-Help you feel more confident in managing your own care

We offer a range of services designed to help you feel better, keep active, and do more things that matter to you.

 

Information for professionals 

 

We support people living with active, progressive and advanced disease, including life limiting illness such as Cancer and non-malignant conditions - neurological conditions, respiratory illness and heart disease - at any stage where the focus is palliative rather than curative.

To access support through the Teesside Hospice Wellbeing Centre, individuals should meet the following criteria:

-Diagnosed with a life limiting illness (including both malignant and non-malignant conditions)

-Medically stable and well enough to attend day services (not requiring In-Patient Care)

-Benefit from social interaction, symptom management and holistic support

-Able to participate in group or one-to-one activities, either independently or with support

-Carer support needs identifies

-Consent provided for referral

 

If you are unsure whether someone meets the criteria, our team is happy to discuss and help to assess suitability for the service.

We offer support with managing a range of symptoms and challenges including breathlessness, fatigue, social isolation, emotional and psychological distress. Our holistic approach also includes carer support, future care planning and access to complementary therapies.

Please note the primary care team will remain the key workers for the patient.

All referrals will be contacted by a member of the team and offered an initial assessment within 28 days. If you feel your referral is urgent, please contact the team on 01642 811072 to discuss in more detail.

At the initial assessment appointment, we will formulate patient goals and signpost the most appropriate treatment, group, 1:1 or workshop.

Please note all sessions are time limited.

Our Wellbeing Centre is open Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm, except bank holidays.

A social group for patients who have attended the wellbeing centre groups, would still like the connection and support from peers. Ran by volunteers, craft activities.
We offer A 10-week Auricular ‘Ear’ Acupuncture Group for patients who are suffering with symptoms of stress and anxiety, alongside some relaxation techniques.
For people with respiratory disease, focusing on managing breathlessness and associated anxiety or panic symptoms. It offers a calm and compassionate space to learn practical techniques to manage symptoms and promote emotional wellbeing this is a 5-week program.
(Help overcoming problems effectively) ran by our colleagues at Impact on Teesside, this is a group-based self- management program developed to empower people living with long- term or life limiting conditions.  It helps individuals explore practical ways to cope better, build resilience and enhance their overall well-being. This is a 7 week program, sessions runs for 2.5 hours.
This session is led by our creative therapist and volunteer, and is a relaxed, welcoming group for men, This group provides a time and space for men to connect, share experiences and support each other, while participating in some of our ‘pub activities’ such as dominoes, cards, darts, pool and quiz. This is a10-week program
This session is led by our very experienced complementary therapists, include 5 weeks of practical information about complementary therapies, the benefits and self-help techniques to use at home, including aroma sticks, relaxation, acupuncture, acupressure, reflexology, Indian head massage and HEARTS process.
A 10-week programme led by our creative therapist, planting pots, seeds, hanging baskets, making bird feeders, session can be held both inside and outside dependent upon the weather, suitable for all abilities.
10-week programme ran by our creative therapist, utilising all aspects of creative activities. Creative therapy is not about a person’s artistic ability, it is about using arts and crafts to improve wellbeing, often helpful for a distraction technique for symptoms such as anxiety, also to help improve social isolation.
A 5-week programme led by our experienced complementary therapist, focusing on relaxation techniques and mindfulness in face to face sessions. Discussing and practising different relaxation techniques, including mindful breathing, body scan, progressive muscle relaxation, visualisations, colour breathing, 4 way breathing.
A social group for patients who have been discharged from the service. This is a chat group for patients living with a terminal illness. The group meets to share experiences, thoughts, and advice about coping at this time.
Complementary therapies are not an alternative to conventional medical treatments, they work alongside them to promote feelings of relaxation and wellbeing. They can also help with emotional and physical symptoms, such as reducing stress and tension, ease aches and pains, help to lift mood, reduce anxiety and help improve sleep.

We offer a range of complementary therapies. Aromatherapy, auricular acupuncture, massage, Indian head massage, reflexology, relaxation techniques, reflexology lymph drainage, Reiki and HEARTS (Hands on, Empathy, Aromas, Relaxation, Textures, Sounds) process

It is well recognised that trying new creative activities is particularly good for our emotions and wellbeing. Getting hands on with something new and creative is important regardless of skill level, it is the taking part that counts.

Tai Chi is a very gentle, holistic system of exercise that can mobilize our joints and strengthen our muscles in a safe, non-competitive way. The sessions are led by Terry Doyle who has over 30 years of teaching experience and are particularly suitable to help participants to become a little stronger and more mobile. Terry also introduces some gentle stretching and breathwork for a greater sense of wellbeing.

There is also a guided deep relaxation in every session to help us learn how to replenish our energy levels and learn how to release our everyday stressors and worries.
10 week sessions exploring varied activities, including music, quizzes, board games. Such activities can be used as a distraction tool – using creativity to cope with pain for example or other difficult symptoms.
Creativity can give us the mind space to reassess problems in our lives and make plans, it can be a means of self-development to face challenges by building up self-esteem and confidence.
Connecting with people who share similar interests, promoting peer support.
Our services are designed to not just for patients but also for those who care for them. We recognise that carers experience emotional, physical and psychological stress often without adequate support.

1:1 complementary therapy appointments - 4 sessions weekly.

Care for Coffee – 1st Thursday of every month 10.30am-12– peer support and creative activities.

Care and share – 3rd Wednesday of the month 1.30pm-3pm – sharing/learning and relaxation session
ran by our physiotherapist, the session will explore the different causes of breathlessness and what we can do to support people experiencing it. Exploring a variety of techniques to help improve breathing control day to day.
ran by our Occupational Therapist, the session will look at managing fatigue and help provide answers to your questions, enable you to regain control over your daily life, learning to pace and rest.
