Since the Patient Comfort Appeal was launched on 11 March, Teesside Hospice has been overwhelmed by generous donations; totalling £40,000 and paying for eight beds which cost £4,900 each.

However, Nurse Practitioner Mandy Burns and the nursing team at Teesside Hospice are still on their mission to raise a total of £49,000 to fund the 10 urgently needed specialist beds for their Inpatient Unit; to help patients be rested and pain free.

Mandy and the nursing team are so grateful for the donations already received; the support from the local community has been outstanding, including Middlesbrough Football Club and the “bring a quid day”. However the Nurses are keen to appeal for the continued support from their community; asking Teesside to help them raise enough money to buy the remaining two specialist beds to ensure maximum comfort for all patients that come through the doors at Teesside Hospice.

The Inpatient Unit at Teesside Hospice, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, is where their most seriously ill patients are cared for within a home from home environment. The exceptional medical team do everything they can to ensure the best possible care however, the Inpatient Unit beds are now 10 years old.

The new and upgraded beds would help the nurses to improve patients’ comfort during their stay.  Improvements in symptom management, pain control, and patient safety would be enhanced, which means patients and their families can make the most of the time they have left together.

Mandy commented, “We are overwhelmed by the kind donations we have already received for our Patient Comfort Appeal.  As nurses, we know how important it is that we upgrade all 10 beds in our Inpatient Unit. We want to be able to give all our patients the best possible experience when they are in our care, and these new specialist beds will really help to keep people rested and pain free.

It is amazing that we can now buy eight of these beds, but we still need to raise funds for another two beds. We are asking that if anyone feels able to help us do this, they will kindly make a donation to the appeal.”
