Each year over 10,000 local people remember their loved ones by making a dedication on the Teesside Hospice Light up a Life tree; a Teesside tradition for more than two decades.

The appeal, kindly sponsored by Colin McGinley Independent Family Funeral Service, is an opportunity to remember someone special and support Teesside Hospice by making a dedication and placing it on the Light up a Life tree in exchange for a donation.

The 12ft tree situated in the Hillstreet Shopping Centre, was officially unveiled during a special celebration switch on event on Saturday. Thousands of lights were turned on in memory of loved ones during the launch and Christmas carols were performed by the talented Tees Valley Youth Chamber Choir.

Steve Hall has lovingly remembered his wife, Barbara, on the tree and shares why he supports Teesside Hospice.

Steve said, “My wife, Barbara was cared for by Teesside Hospice in May 2017. The love and care shown to Barbara, and us her family, in her final days was exceptional. I don’t think you could get care like that from anywhere else. I’m really proud to support the Light up a Life appeal, in fact I support Teesside Hospice wherever I can.”

This year’s Light up a Life tree will stand in the Hillstreet Shopping Centre until Wednesday 18th December. The dedications will then be taken to St. Barnabas Church for a special Light up a Life Service on Thursday 19th December at 7pm, where the tree will be blessed and loved ones will be remembered. All supporters of the campaign are invited to attend.

Hillstreet Shopping Centre Manager, Peter Drabble said: “We have been the host of the Teesside Hospice Light up a Life appeal for many years, and we are so pleased to have the Light up a Life tree standing proudly in the centre once again.

This appeal raises vital funds to support the work of the hospice, which we know is a real support to many of our local shoppers. Every year we are overwhelmed with the support from our local community, and we hope they will once again get involved and give the appeal the support it deserves.”

Colin McGinley Funeral Care Manager, Garry Savage said: “We are proud to sponsor Teesside Hospice because of the dedication, love and support they show at such a difficult time. This gesture from our local family business is a way to show how much we appreciate everything they do for families across Teesside and surrounding areas. The Light up a Life appeal is a special way for families to remember their loved ones, and we hope it provides some comfort and peace throughout Christmas time.”

Teesside Hospice Fundraising Manager, Kim Bradley, said: “We are delighted to have the support of Colin McGinley Funeral Service and the Hillstreet Shopping Centre once again. Due to their support we can ensure that every penny donated to Light up a Life goes directly towards caring for our patients and families at the hospice this Christmas. We know that every moment counts and we want to make the festive period as special as possible for the patients and families who will be staying with us during this time. We couldn’t do any of this without the support from our sponsors and our local community. Thank you.”
