The nursing team at Teesside Hospice are on a mission to raise enough money to fund 10 urgently needed specialist beds for our Inpatient Unit, to help patients be rested and pain free.

Our Inpatient Unit, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, has 10 beds.  This is where our most seriously ill patients are cared for who are too poorly to be at home. Our exceptional medical team do everything they can to ensure the best possible care however, the Inpatient Unit beds are now 10 years old.

The nursing team, including Nurse Practitioner Mandy Burns, are appealing for the support of their community to help raise enough money to upgrade to newer, more advanced specialist beds to ensure maximum comfort for all patients.

Most people who are cared for in the Inpatient Unit have very little mobility and spend the majority of their time in bed.  Turning to find a comfortable position can be virtually impossible and skin lacerations and breathing issues often become a problem.  Whilst Mandy and the specialist nursing team do everything they can to prevent this, having the right equipment is so important.

The new and upgraded beds would help the nurses to improve patients’ comfort during their stay.  Improvements in symptom management, pain control, and patient safety would be enhanced, but this comes at a huge cost.

Each new bed costs £4,900, which means we need to raise a total of £49,000 for the 10 beds that are desperately needed.

The Patient Comfort Appeal aims to raise these funds and has already attracted the support of Middlesbrough Football Club player, Adam Clayton.  On hearing Mandy’s plea, Adam was inspired to visit and see for himself, the comfortable and caring environment within Teesside Hospice’s Inpatient Unit.

Adam commented, “When I heard about Teesside Hospice’s Patient Comfort Appeal, I became aware of how important it is to have the right specialist bed for every person who comes to stay.  None of us know when our friends or family members may be in a position to need the amazing care provided by Mandy and the nursing team – and we would all want our loved ones to feel as rested and as comfortable as possible.

On match day, on 30th March at the Riverside, me and the rest of the lads are asking our supporters to donate to the Patient Comfort Appeal for Teesside Hospice.  We are having a ‘Bring a quid day’ with bucket collections in the grounds and hope everyone will dig deep so we can help fund the specialist beds that they so desperately need.”
