How long have you volunteered with Teesside Hospice?

Just over a year – started in November 2021

Which area of Teesside Hospice do you volunteer in and what do you do day to day? 

I volunteer in the wellbeing centre on a Thursday morning doing creative therapy class – doing arts and crafts with the patients such as painting, textiles, a whole range of things. 

What is the reason you started to volunteer with Teesside Hospice?

I retired from work in 2021, and I wanted to do some volunteering. Teesside Hospice looked after my mam a few years ago so I had some experience of coming into here to visit my mam. My Mam used to go to the wellbeing classes and she really enjoyed them, and when I contacted Teesside hospice they were looking for someone in wellbeing so it fitted in nicely.

What has your experience been like volunteering with Teesside Hospice?

Fantastic – I have really loved it. The staff are brilliant, the patients are brilliant. The biggest surprise is how positive and upbeat and uplifting it is, because a lot of people have a bit of a stigma about Hospices. I think its that word – ‘Hospice’ – people have really negative thoughts about it, but its not like that at all from my experience. I never expected so much laughter, singing, and dancing – its great.

What has volunteering with Teesside Hospice done for you?

It has given me a different outlook on Hospices. It gives me enjoyment and I always go away with a smile on my face despite what the patients are going through and their experiences. I still come away happy, and I know I have helped someone and made a difference, no matter how small it may be.

Do you have any advice for potential Teesside Hospice volunteers?

Do it! And come in with an open mind
