Teesside Hospice’s Bereavement Café is celebrating its one year anniversary.

Since 2018, the hospice has offered a relaxed space in which people can come together with others who understand what they are going through, because of a shared experience of loss.

The café is open to anyone who has had a bereavement, with no pressure to talk unless you feel like it. Staff from Teesside Hospice are on hand at each session to offer support, advice and information.

After his father sadly passed away, Stuart came to the Bereavement Café for support: “I found it extremely beneficial and it helped me to move forward with my life. Although I had managed without the counselling for a while, when I heard about the Bereavement Café I thought it was a brilliant idea. It has meant that I continue to feel supported on a monthly basis, and I have spoken to other people who have been newly bereaved and felt I was able to help and support them in some way. The café is very well attended. It’s a great way to meet people for a chat in a safe, relaxed and comfortable environment. I would encourage anyone who has been bereaved to call in.”

The vital work of the Bereavement Café is carried out by the generosity of our fantastic volunteers. Lisa, who has helped run the Bereavement Café since it began, has seen such a positive difference to people who attend the café. “People have made friends, had a laugh, and are able to give one another encouragement because they are all at different stages of their grief journey”.

Grief can sometimes feel like a lonely place, we want to encourage people to come together to find courage and strength in knowing they are not alone. Pop in for some company, a cuppa and cake.

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered, fundraised and donated, for your endless support. With your help, we can support more people like Stuart who are going through a difficult time.

Bereavement Café takes place the first Tuesday of every month, 2:30pm – 4:30pm at Teesside Hospice Coffee Shop, 1 Northgate Road, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough TS5 5NW. Please come along, we would love to meet you. For further information contact 01642 811075.
