Anna's Testimonial

How long have you volunteered with Teesside Hospice?

Around 3 months

Which area of Teesside Hospice do you volunteer in and what do you do day to day?

I volunteer in HR and I support the HR function, wherever help is needed. This differs from week to week.

What is the reason you started to volunteer with Teesside Hospice?

I had a bit more time on my hands because the role I was working in didn’t need me as much as they did. I used to volunteer previously at the hospice in the marketing office, so it came to mind. I wanted to volunteer within a HR team so the role seemed perfect. If I am going to volunteer somewhere, I want to volunteer somewhere that is making a difference to people who really need it.

What has your experience been like volunteering with Teesside Hospice?

It has been really good; everyone is super welcoming here. The role that I have had is really diverse which is interesting, and the wider teams are really nice as well. Everyone is always smiling and happy, saying good morning, and chatting. Plus I got to pet a Pony last week which has never happened anywhere else! Mr Perfect the Pony was a big highlight.

What has volunteering with Teesside Hospice done for you?

I think for me it has given me a bit more confidence in my HR knowledge. I had it all there but I hadn’t used a lot of it for a while, and it is nice to be in an environment where that is supported.

Do you have any advice for potential Teesside Hospice volunteers?

Just come in and see that the hospice is not necessarily what you might have in your head of it being. It is a really upbeat, happy place. Obviously the work being done is dealing with something that can be heart breaking in a lot of cases, that is not what you see in your day to day when you are here. That is not the atmosphere or the experience of being in the hospice.

Do you see the difference that your volunteering makes?

Yes – it is pretty clear. I help to support HR which looks after the staff and volunteers. If we weren’t here doing what we were doing then the staff and volunteers wouldn’t be able to perform their roles in helping people who are suffering and in distress. So I can see that it makes a big difference, and that is why I do it.

THANK YOU! To Anna and all of our volunteers here at Teesside Hospice.
