Inpatient care

Teesside Hospice’s Inpatient Unit provides specialist palliative care to patients for four main reasons:

  • To control symptoms relating to their illness such as pain and nausea
  • For respite care to give families and carers the opportunity to have a break from nursing
  • For end of life care: Some patients choose to spend their last days in the unit, being admitted during the very late stages of their illness
  • To rehabilitate patients who may have had a long stay in hospital to allow them to return home to their families if that is possible or another care provision when home is not an option

Our Inpatient Unit consists of ten ground floor spacious individual bedded rooms with en-suite facilities. All rooms are furnished to a high standard and it is our aim to create a homely atmosphere and easy access to garden areas.

All patient areas have the reassurance of a nurse call system with care provided 24 hours per day, 365 days of the year. This part of the Hospice is an acute facility with the average length of stay at thirteen days. In an average month the Inpatient Unit  cares for between fifteen and twenty patients.

Patients in the Inpatient Unit are cared for by our multi-disciplinary team which includes our Medical Team, Occupational Therapist, Dietician, Social Worker, Physiotherapist and Complementary Therapists.
