In response to the lack of education around complex lymphoedema management nationally, Teesside Hospice has teamed up with Macmillan Cancer Support to introduce a Specialist Lymphoedema Skills module accredited by the University of Teesside.

The 20 M level course has been developed to address issues around complex lymphoedema management and will provide Health Care Professionals (HCPs) with the knowledge and specialist skills necessary to effectively treat this group of patients.

This course of study will provide the opportunity to learn the theory and practice of advanced skills in the management of lymphoedema, including the Casley-Smith technique of Manual Lymphatic Drainage and current available options for lymphoedema bandaging.

Module content will also explore the lack of public awareness, poor professional knowledge, delayed diagnosis and inappropriate treatment resulting in a significant impact on practice. Other practice-related issues include a poor understanding of treatment options among practitioners, a lack of evidence-based practice as well as difficulties associated with managing psychosocial problems and of ensuring concordance with treatment will also be addressed.

The 10-day course will end with an assessment of clinical skills and oral viva.
